How do You Make Butter Cream Icing?

I love to make cakes and decorate them on the side. The last cake I had the pleasure of making was a Gothic baby shower cake. Yep, you heard that right! I have to admit it was different, but a lot of fun. How you make buttercream icing is not complicated and you will need: 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, 1/2 cup butter or margarine, 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract, 4 cups (about 1 pound) sifted confectioners sugar, and 2 tablespoons milk. Cream the butter and shortening together. Add vanilla. Slowly add sugar, one cup at a time, beating with electric mixer. When all the sugar has been mixed, the icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat until light and fluffy. It’s important to keep the icing covered with a damp cloth until ready to use so it doesn’t dry out. You can store for up to 2 weeks in the fridge. If you want to ice the cake with buttercream, add 3 to 4 tablespoons of light corn syrup to thin. Have fun!
