What a yummy project! You will first need to gather your materials. For this you will need 1 cup of water, 3 cups of sugar, a clean glass jar, a pencil, yarn, a pan for boiling the water, a spoon, and food coloring if you want your crystals to be colored. Next, tie the yarn around the pencil and place the pencil across the top of the jar making sure the end of the yarn is close to the bottom of the jar, but not touching it or the sides. Now it is time to boil your water. Once your water has boiled, add the sugar a teaspoon full at a time until sugar gathers at the bottom of the pan and won’t dissolve anymore. This means your solution is ready. Now, if you want to add color, this is the time to stir in some of the food coloring. Pour your solution into the jar, but make sure the undissolved sugar at the bottom of the pan does not get poured into the jar. Now put the pencil with the yarn tied to it over the top of the jar and place the jar in an area where it won’t be disturbed. You can cover your jar if you like so dust won’t get in it. A coffee filter works great to cover it. Now the fun begins. Check your crystal each day and watch it grow. Once it has reached your desired size, take it out and let it dry. Voila, you have made sugar crystals. You can either eat them or keep them to look at. Enjoy!
