How do Silkworms Make Silk?

The silkworm is actually a caterpillar and the process of creating the silk actually occurs when the silkworm reaches adulthood and begins making its cocoon. The worm spews a clear liquid from it salivary glands in one long strand which hardens into the silk. If the silkworm is on a harvest farm the worm is killed by placing the cocoon in a oven before it is allowed to hatch, in order to harvest the silk. For more information, look here:
